We took a wine tour and enjoyed a light dinner at a local winery overlooking Lake Geneva, Domaine Blaise Duboux in Lavaux. We savored wonderful views and beautiful varietals of locally grown and bottled-on-site red and white wines.
The winery produces a rare, organic red wine called Plant Robert from an old Gamay clone in the Lavaux AOC region of Switzerland. Known for its spicy, dark fruit, and peppery notes, offering a complex and rustic yet refined character, it’s a specialty of the area, often aged in oak, and pairs well with poultry, game, and cheese.
Who knew there were an Aliens in Gruyères??? We had some cheese in town and had to pull up a seat for a cold one at the local Alien bar.
The artist who created the Alien in the movie retired here and has a museum of his work! The HR Giger Museum and the HR Giger Bar in Gruyères is located in the historic Château St. Germain, where the museum houses the largest collection of artwork by the Oscar-winning designer of the Alien film franchise.
The Museum displays original Alien movie props, set designs, terrifying biomechanical sculptures, and dark, surrealist paintings. (If you’re traveling with young children… you may want to skip this stop, as it can be frightening!)
Next up was exploring the lovely town of Bern! It has a majestic cathedral and a beautiful clock tower that visitors can visit to see the mechanical movements at the top of the hour.
Bern has a beautiful river that many locals swim and do float trips down. Albert Einstein lived in town and there is a museum at his apartment where he lived and wrote many of his important theories at.
Additionally, there is a lovely city center with lots of shopping and eateries.
The next day, we visited Chillon Castle. The poet Lord Byron visited in 1816 and wrote his famous narrative poem The Prisoner of Chillon about Bonivard, carving his name into a dungeon pillar.
